Award of Madanjeet Singh Group Scholarships for the Joint Master’s Degree Programme with University of Kashmir, Srinagar  and Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, commencing August, 2015 

University of Kashmir, Srinagar, through the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute of Kashmir Studies (UMIKS), and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi have agreed on the joint award of the Master’s Degree in South Asia and Kashmir Studies, for the two year (four semesters) programme beginning with August, 2015.

For the 2015-17 Programme, applications are invited from eligible candidates from SAARC countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka). 

I. Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree in any discipline under 10+2+3 pattern with at least 45 % marks from a recognized University. 

II. Total seats available: Sixteen (16) Madanjeet Singh Group scholarships, to be awarded by South Asia Foundation (SAF-India) to 2 candidates, a Female and a Male, from each of the eight SAARC countries (listed above), on the basis of gender equality

III. For the joint Master’s degree Programme, the 1st and 3rd semesters (August-December each year) will be conducted at University of Kashmir, Srinagar and the 2nd and 4th semester (January to May each year) at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.

Candidates for the Madanjeet Singh Group Scholarships are requested to apply to the SAF chapters in their respective countries, as per list given below. The Madanjeet Singh Group Scholarships cover tuition fees, eeconomy air travel from the scholar’s place of residence within SAARC to Srinagar and back (initial and final), accommodation (twin-sharing) and a monthly stipend of Indian Rupees 10,000 (ten thousand). In addition, SAF-India will provide travel from Srinagar to New Delhi and stay at Jamia Millia Islamia for the second and fourth semesters.

All candidates applying for Madanjeet Singh Group Scholarships for the Master’s Programme in South Asia and Kashmir Studies should submit the following documents to the SAF offices of the respective SAARC countries:

1.   Class XII Certificate, including mark sheet

2.   Bachelor’s Degree certificate, including mark sheet

3.   English Language Proficiency Certificate (as appropriate)

4.   A copy of valid passport

5.   Birth Certificate

6.   Brief CV, including contact: e-mail address and mobile phone numbers of the candidate

7.   Brief write-up, indicating the reasons for applying for this program and how it is going to be useful for the applicant. 

 All the accepted candidates should produce original documents, to SAF-India in New Delhi and at the time of admission at UMIKS, Srinagar. A Skype interview could be conducted by SAF-India/ UMIKS, Srinagar/ Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.

                                                       IMPORTANT DATES: Last date for receipt of applications is 15th July  2015. 

 Classes will commence in the 1st week of August 2015.

 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

 (i) The four semester Master’s programme will have four papers per semester, of four credits each, making a total of 16 credits per semester, and 64 credits for the Master’s programme;

(ii) Three of the four papers in each semester would be core papers, and one paper would be an elective paper;

(iii) The core papers in each of the four semesters are as follows:

Semester I (University of Kashmir)

Theories of Regionalism and Integration;

Political Economy of South Asia;

Heritage of Jammu & Kashmir : History, Philosophy and Literature.

Semester II (Jamia Millia Islamia)

Research Methodology;

Democracy, Governance and Development in South Asia;

Foreign Policy of South Asian Countries.

Semester III (University of Kashmir)
Gender and Society in South Asia;

Human Development in South Asia;

Regional Integration in a Comparative Perspective.

Semester IV (Jamia Millia Islamia) 

Research Project;

Towards Harmony in Society;

Spiritual Traditions in South Asia.

(iv) Students would be given a choice of four or five papers from which they could choose their elective paper, one per semester with four credits each. 

(v) Details about the course content for each of the core and elective papers will be available, upon request.
