The newly established UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Centre for South Asia Water Management (UMCSAWM) attached to the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka ceremonially declared open by Madame France Marquet (Principal Trustee, South Asia Foundation (SAF)) representing UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador late Shri Madanjeet Singh (SAF Founder) on this April 22nd, 2013, in the presence of Mr. Shigeru Aoyagi (Director of UNESCO Office, New Delhi and UNESCO Representative to Bhutan, India, Maldives and Sri Lanka), Mr. N. Ram (Advisor to SAF), Her Excellency Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga (Chairperson, SAF Sri Lanka Chapter and Former President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka), Prof. Ananda Jayawardane (Vice-Chancellor, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka), other dignitaries including country representatives from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), university officials, staff and students.
The UMCSAWM has been established with the support of the South Asia Foundation (SAF), with the objective of promoting regional cooperation through South Asian water management education. The Department of Civil Engineering, in collaboration with UMCSAWM, intends to conduct Master of Engineering/Postgraduate Diploma courses while offering fully paid Madanjeet Singh Scholarships (funded by SAF) to students from SAARC countries. The Centre will conduct other related short courses/workshops and also engage in pioneer research in areas of relevance to South Asian countries.
