Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice Chairperson- BangladeshDhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) has selected noted educationist Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury for awarding the Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah Gold Medal-2012 in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of education, engineering and research. The medal will be formally handed over to him very soon.

Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury was born in Sylhet and had his early education in St. Gregory's School and Dhaka College in Dhaka. He obtained B.Sc. (Eng), in Civil, degree in 1963 as first class first from University of Engineering & Technology (BUET) and M.Sc. Engineering and Ph.D. Degree from University of Southampton in 1968. He was awarded a Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship in 1974 and passed a year at the University of Surrey, UK, as a Visiting Associate Professor. He was awarded the Doctor of Engineering degree from Manchester University in 2010. Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury developed a simple method for analysis of shear walls in tall buildings (Commonly known as ‘Coull and Choudhury’s Method’) which has been widely used all over the world. The method is part of many text books in the field and taught to designers in different countries. He developed the first ‘Wind Design Speed’ Map for Bangladesh and developed the first `Seismic Zoning Map of Bangladesh and Outline of Earthquake Resistant Design of Buildings’ Prof. Choudhury has authored about 65 writes-up in different international journals.

Prof. Choudhury is entangled in different socio-cultural organizations alongside his formal responsibilities. He was the chairman, of Board of Directors of Bangladesh Shilpa Bank from 1996 to 98 and was the Chairman, Board of Governors, Bangladesh Institute of Technology, Chittagong. He was appointed as Adviser in the Caretaker Government in April, 1996 and was in charge of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Water Resources. He was a member of the lT Task Force from 2001 to 2009 headed by the Prime Minister. He was the Convener of Committee for Preparing Voter List with Photographs.

He received a number of awards, like IEB (lnstitution of Engineers, Bangladesh) Gold Medal, Dr. M. A. Rashid Gold Medal, Lions international Gold Medal, Bangladesh Computer Society Gold Medal, Sarojini Naidu Medal, Sheltech Award 2011 and Kazi AzharAli Foundation Gold Medal 2011.

Since 1986, DAM has been awarding the medal after noted educationist, social reformer, practitioner of Sufism, former Assistant Director of the Department of Public Instruction and founder of DAM, Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah (R). Previously, the medal was awarded to 20 noted personalities for their outstanding contributions in different fields at the national level.
