UMSAILS in UAP awards 4 international students
The Department of Law and Human Rights, University of Asia Pacific (UAP) has a special centre of excellence named the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh South Asian Institute of Advanced Legal and Human Rights Studies (UMSAILS), which significantly contributes to legal education. This institute hosts foreign students from different SAARC countries under the South Asia Foundation (SAF) scholarship. The centre has created a supra-national classroom, where Bangladeshi and foreign students are set together to pursue the LLM degree and share their academic experiences.
On Sunday the institute ends the academic activities of its 5th batch and awards all students in a graduation dinner event at The Hotel Pan Pacific Sonargoan, Dhaka. 22 students have been awarded an LLM degree this year, including 4 international students— two from Nepal, One from Indian-administrated Kashmir and One from Afghanistan. The legendary lawyer and UMSAILS chair Dr Kamal Hossain attended the event as the chief guest. The chair of SAF Bangladesh Ambassador Farooq Sobhan, the chairperson of the UAP Board of Trustees (BoT) Architect Mahbuba Haque, Senior lawyer Barrister Sara Hossain, SAILS board member Dr. Sharif Bhuiyan, UAP BoT member Qayum Reza Chowdhury, Engr. M Abu Taher, UAP Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qamrul Ahsan, Mrs Hamida Hossain, The dean of the faculty of Law Dr M A. Baqui Khalili, The chairman of the Department of Law & Human Rights Mr Md Asaduzzaman, UMSAILS co-ordinator Dr. Chowdhury Ishrak Ahmed Siddiky, SAF Secretary Mr M Zakaria and other faculty members attended the event.
On the occasion, SAILS announced Barrister Sara Hossain and Dr Sharif Bhuiyan as co-chairs of its board as part of re-organizing its board. The participants in the event expressed optimism that in the upcoming days, SAILS will continue to be a hub of regional cooperation and academic excellence. In the coming year also it 6 international students from Bhutan, Nepal, India and Sri Lanka will be admitted to the LLM program.
