18 September-22 September 2022
"The UMSAILS- UAP Spring School 2022" was organised by the South Asian Institute of Advanced Legal and Human Rights (SAILS), Centre for Law, Governance and Policy (CELGAP) and the University of Asia Pacific (UAP) centered around the theme of 'Law and Social Justice.
In every civilised society, law impacts on a citizen's life not only by regulating and shaping human behaviour but also by providing a means of protection against the arbitrariness of executive authority. When a citizen's fundamental rights are threatened, they have to seek resort to legal processes for redress of their grievances. Law comes to the aid of a citizen in upholding their rights – it assists the weak and the oppressed against the might of the rich and the powerful. At the same time, the law facilitates in the creation of an egalitarian society by remedying an unequal distribution of wealth, resources and opportunities so that everyone has a fair chance to thrive in their chosen field. The power of law to achieve social jus tice cannot be denied.
In the increasingly complex society that we live in today, the interplay between law and social jus tice demands serious discussion. What role can constitution- ally guaranteed fundamental rights play in achieving social justice? How can law achieve jus tice for marginalised individuals and communities who are far removed from the legal world? How does the law facilitate in establishing environmental justice? Can economic justice be achieved in an increasingly corrupt society? How successful has the existing legal framework been in establishing gender justice? Can access to justice be ensured for all? These are some of the questions that will be tackled during the course of the 5 days of the spring school.
The UMSAILS- UAP Spring School 2022 has been designed to provide law students access to a wide range of topical issues relating to law and social justice. Program components of the spring school involve gaining insights from experts through lectures, participating in the sessions and various other activities. The 5 day spring school - it is hoped - will contribute meaningfully to the ongoing global conversations regarding law and social justice, and help harness the passion and energy of the youth in our quest to shape a better and brighter future.
