27 January marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by the Soviet troops in 1945 and was officially proclaimed International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust by the United Nations General Assembly. This year’s International Day follows the theme “Holocaust Remembrance and Education: Our Shared Responsibility”. For this occasion, from 22nd to 25th January, UNESCO, in partnership with the Shoah Memorial, has organised a series of events: a screening of Claude Lanzmann’s Four Sisters, a round table, an official ceremony, and exhibitions.
The commemoration, organised by UNESCO in partnership with the Shoah Memorial, begins on 22nd January with a screening of a previre of the film The Four Sisters: The Hippocratic Oath – Ruth Elias (part 1), in the presence of the director Claude Lanzmann (8.00 pm, Room I), the first of four films that recounts the stories of four women who survived the Nazi destruction of European Jewry.
On 25th January (3.30 pm, room II) a round-table, on the theme "Holocaust Remembrance and Education: Our Shared Responsibility", will bring together Serge Klarsfeld, Lawyer, Historian, UNESCO Special Envoy for Education about the Holocaust and the Prevention of Genocide; Doudou Diène, lawyer, former United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, Senegal; Henry Rousso, historian, Director of Research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and Floriane Hohenberg, Director of the International Tracing Service (Germany).
The round-table will be followed, at 6.30 pm (Room I), by a ceremony dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, in the presence of the Direction-general of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay and the President of the Shoah Memorial, Eric de Rothschild. During this ceremony, Yvette Lévy, Auschwitz survivor, will share her testimony. The ceremony will conclude with a performance by the Austrian duo Ariela, who will interpret pieces composed by survivors or victims of the Holocaust.
In parallel, two exhibitions will be displayed at the Headquarters of the Organisation : one on the Kristallnacht pogrom, from the 22nd January to 3rd February (Miró Halls), presented by the Shoah Memorial. The other, entitled #StolenMemory, presented on the fences of UNESCO, explores the International Tracing Service’s restitution work of personal objects lost in concentration camps. #StolenMemory will be officially opened on 25th January at 5.30 pm.
