Giving indigenous girls a second chance at learning in Guatemala


When Francisca reached third grade, she had no choice but to leave school. She started working in the fields and taking care of her siblings to help her parents. For most indigenous girls in Guatemala living in a poor family with many siblings, studying is out of the question. In 2018, two new UNESCO Malala Centers in 2018 will help girls like Francisca assert their right to education.

Jordanian and Syrian youth graduate on UNESCO-led scholarship


The UNESCO Amman office, in collaboration with Al Quds College, honoured the achievements of 201 Jordanian and Syrian youth graduating from training under a project funded by the Government of the Republic of Korea. The UNESCO-led scholarship programme provides technical and vocational education and training opportunities for vulnerable Jordanian and Syrian youth.

UNESCO girls’ and women’s education prize-winner provides stateless girls with life skills and education


“Girls have the right to be taught,” says Sompop Jantraka, founder of the Development and Education Programme for Daughters and Communities Center in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region in northern Thailand. In a remote area where many stateless people are struggling for survival, thousands of children - girls more than boys - are not in school. Many start work as young as 10 years old.

UNESCO at COP23: Partner power speeds climate change education


The critical importance of education and strong partnerships in international responses to climate change was the key message on “Education Day” held at the UN climate conference in Bonn, Germany in November. UNESCO, together with partners, held a series of side-events and discussions on a variety of issues, including schools’ climate readiness, teacher education for climate change and youth leadership.

Education Ministers focus on strengthening accountability and financing


At the 39th session of the UNESCO General Conference last month, two ministerial panel debates explored the different mechanisms established by governments to promote accountability and transparency, including public monitoring and reporting. The high-level event with Education Ministers examined how greater accountability can benefit funding for education, and move the Education 2030 agenda forward.

UNESCO Member States adopt recommendations of Education Commission


UNESCO Member States adopted the recommendations presented by the Education Commission at the 39th General Conference. Among the key items approved were UNESCO’s role in the implementation of SDG4-Education 2030, the Draft Programme and Budget for 2018-2021 and the “Academic Mobility Convention”.
