Education and Gender Equality: The Perfect Partners for Development As part of UNESCO’s celebrations of International Day of the Girl Child, an event, co-hosted by UNESCO (Division for Gender Equality and the Global Education Monitoring Team) and the Permanent Delegation of Canada to UNESCO will officially launch the 2016 Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report Gender Review, bringing together diverse and high-profile panellists to recognise the many links between education and gender equality and to explore their relationship with child, early and forced marriage.
The presentations and panel discussion will build on longstanding acknowledgement that improving girls’ education and ensuring equitable educational opportunities for all girls and boys, with substantive gender equality are necessary for global social justice.

The event will also mark the start of a week’s activity, culminating in the launch of an exhibit entitled, Girls’ Voices: Speaking Out Against Child Marriage, which tells the untold stories of girls at risk of child marriage who are standing up for their rights, and the community members advocating for change alongside them.

Key objectives:
• Share the major findings from the 2016 GEM Report Gender Review with key audiences at UNESCO.
• Show the important synergies between education and gender equality and why cross-sectoral partnerships are crucial to improve multiple, linked and connected outcomes.
