A new development this year has been the operationalisation of the institutional tie up between ACJ and the prestigious Cardiff University in Wales, UK.
The Cardiff Journalism Department is very highly rated and is among the top three in the UK. The ACJ-Cardiff partnership allows ACJ graduates to acquire the Masters Degree in Journalism from Cardiff University by successfully completing only an additional dissertation over a period of three months.
This means that a student, having completed the one year postgraduate diploma at ACJ, is eligible for a Masters Degree from Cardiff by spending just another three months on the dissertation project. In other words, an MA degree from a prestigious university in the UK is possible in just a year and three months, as against the requirement of two years for postgraduate degree in an Indian University.
We are happy to report that Cardiff University has, for the first time in its history, tied up with an educational institution outside UK for award of a degree under such a partnership scheme. This was made possible because Cardiff University thoroughly audited the ACJ Postgraduate programme and found that it was, in all respects, on par with the postgraduate degree programme in journalism offered by the University in Wales.
The Cardiff-ACJ partnership is of particular relevance to the SAF scholarship scheme at ACJ because, this year three of the SAF scholars, Naimul Karim, Tenzin and Shreejana Shrestha, were selected for the M.A. Programme. However, two of them, Tenzin and Shreejana Shrestha, could not actually take up the offer because they could not complete the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in time for the application of visas.
The SAF scholar from Bangladesh, Naimul Karim attended the course and completed the dissertation and will be receiving his MA Degree at the convocation of the University. Naimul is all praise for the Cardiff scheme and the tremendous value of the three months he spent in the University at Wales.
Apart from this, all the SAF scholars actively participated in the curricular and extra -curricular programmes at ACJ during the year 2010-2011. They also went on the Covering Deprivation trips to Mangalore, Koraput, Raichur and Vellore, which gave them a fascinating insight into the routine life of rural India. The faculty found all the SAF scholars dedicated and committed and driven to make the best use of their scholarship at ACJ.
The scholars from Bangladesh, Srilanka and Bhutan were very competent in English language (which is the medium of instruction) and could therefore cope with the programme effortlessly. The scholars from Afghanistan, Nepal and Maldives had to make the extra effort to be abreast of the rest because of their relatively poorer grasp of English. But, to their credit they made the necessary effort and qualified for the ACJ postgraduate diploma.
