Hadi Rahnaward is a multi-disciplinary Afghan artist who works in video, drawing, installation and performance. His work is based on mediums rooted in time: through processes of repetition, he depicts contemporary Afghan history as a vicious circle of self-repeating absurdities. For Latitudes Contemporaines, he will present his 2021 video.

CAPTIVITY (2021), Hadi Rahnaward, UMISAA Alumni
‘Captivity’ delves into the relentless conflict in Afghanistan, illustrating the enduring captivity throughout an unending war. This video employs methods of repetition metaphorically to describe contemporary Afghan history as a vicious circle of absurdity that perpetually recurs. The piece portrays the trapped mindset of individuals entangled in the chaos of war, utilizing recurring hand movements that symbolize the cycle of captivity experienced by those caught in the conflict. Despite the video exploring the conflict, the violence is intentionally omitted, instead focusing on the psychological toll of war on its victims. Also, the video depicts self-treatment for the effects of war.
