The Department of Law and Human Rights, University of Asia Pacific in collaboration with UNESCO Madanjeet Singh South Asian Institute of Advanced Legal and Human Rights Studies (UMSAILS) started the UMSAILS LLM Programme for the students of the SAARC countries, with fully funded scholarships at the Department of Law and Human Rights, University of Asia Pacific on 21 October 2019. A Freshers’ Reception programme was arranged by the Department of Law and Human Rights, UAP and SAILS jointly on 19 October 2019. Dr. Kamal Hossain, Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh and Chairperson of SAILS and Late National Professor Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, former Vice Chancellor, UAP and former Vice- Chairperson of SAILS were present at the programme.

In the Fall Semester-2019, 4 students from Bangladesh, 2 students from Nepal and 2 from Bhutan received fully funded scholarships.

Special Lecture organized by UMSAILS
UMSAILS in partnership with the Department works for the development of the knowledge and skills of the students. In this regard, on 6 November 2019 SAILS arranged a special lecture on “the Role of Forensic Science in upholding Human Rights by Ensuring Justice” and the speaker was Md. Nazmul Haque PPM, Additional Inspector General of Police (Retd.).

Diamond Lamichhane, a student of UNESCO Madanjeet Singh South Asian Institute of Advanced Legal and Human Rights Studies (UMSAILS) LLM Program attended a training program on Youth Capacity building, entrepreneurial development and peace building proffering the youth from fundamental changes organized by Republic of Somaliland in association with Africa Youth Parliament from 21- 25 November 2019.

On 10 December 2019 SAILS in partnership with Department of Law and Human Rights, University of Asia Pacific and NILS Bangladesh observed the National Human Rights Day at the UAP. On that occasion in the morning, they made a Human Chain at the UAP premises and later on Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh presented a paper at the Seminar.

UMSAILS SAF Students attended several special classes on International Criminal Law in order to prepare them for the International Criminal Court Mooting Competition- 2020 at the Hague, Netherlands.

The International Criminal Court Moot Competition 2020 is the largest, most prestigious and one of the oldest moot court competitions in the world
with participation from more than 700 Universities from approximately 100 countries in the various regional and national rounds. The Moot Team UMSAILS LLM of the Department of Law & Human Rights, University of Asia Pacific had qualified to represent Bangladesh in the International Round of this prestigious competition, which was scheduled to be held at the Hague, Netherlands from 7-12 June, 2020. Unfortunately, the oral rounds of the 2020 ICC Moot Court Competition were cancelled due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Team UAP were looking forward to going to the Netherlands after having cleared the preliminary round.  

National Human Rights day -UMSAILS
South Asian Institute of Advanced Legal and Human Rights Studies (SAILS) organized a Seminar on "Capital Punishment in the Global Context - Current Trends and Challenges" on 31 January 2020 at the Department of Law and Human Rights, University of Asia Pacific. Professor Saul Lehrfreund MBE, School of Law, University of Reading was the key note speaker at the seminar.

Residential Spring School-
Five day long residential Spring School on SDG – 16 was organized by UNESCO Madanjeet Singh South Asian Institute of Advanced Legal and Human Rights Studies (UMSAILS) in partnership with the Department of Law and Human Rights of UAP. Selected students from different law schools of Bangladesh participated in this programme which was held from 10th-14th of March, 2020 at the Brac University Campus in Savar. Distinguished national and international resource persons delivered lectures on different issues related to SDG – 16: "Peace, justice and strong institutions: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels".

The closing ceremony of the Spring School was chaired by National Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice-Chancellor of UAP. Justice Hemant Laxman Gokhale, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India, and Dr. Kamal Hossain, Chairperson, SAILS, and Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh spoke at the closing ceremony.

The Department started classes of the second Semester of the UMSAILS LLM programme on 12 April, 2020 with the permission of the then Vice Chancellor Late National Professor Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury. The results of the first batch of the UMSAILS students were published on 11 October 2020.

UMSAILS LLM Programme 2nd Batch (January 2021)

The orientation programme of the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh South Asian Institute of Advanced Legal and Human Rights Studies (UMSAILS) LLM programme was held online on 2nd January, 2021. Thirty students from fifteen different public and private universities from the South Asian region were admitted to the LLM Program with full and partial scholarships funded by SAF and UAP.  
Prof. Dr. Md. Sultan Mahmud, Acting Vice-Chancellor, UAP, chaired the orientation programme.  Dr. Kamal Hossain, the Chairperson of SAILS, Bangladesh was the chief guest.

Mr. C.M. Shafi Sami, Vice Chairperson of SAILS and Chairman, Board of Trustees, UAP addressed the function as a distinguished guest. Mrs. France Marquet, Trustee, Madanjeet Singh Foundation and representative of South Asia Foundation to UNESCO, Mr. Farooq Sobhan, Chairperson of South Asia Foundation Bangladesh Chapter and Mrs. Khushi Kabir, Vice-Chairperson of South Asia Foundation Bangladesh Chapter were present as special guests.

Three alumni students were invited to share their experience of the UM-SAILS LLM programme.  For the Fall Semester-2020, 3 students from Bangladesh, 2 students from India, 1 student from Nepal and 2 from Bhutan have received fully funded scholarships. The LLM classes for the second batch started on 3 January 2021.

The students will receive legal training through curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities. In addition to regular class room teaching, students will participate in debates, moot courts, court visits and clinical programmes. The Department takes pride in its outstanding and exceptionally rich faculty of renowned professors, reputed lawyers and eminent judges of Bangladesh.
