Helsinki, Finland – In a moment of pride for India, SAF (South Asia Foundation) Alumni Ms. Vinaya Vilas Deshpande has been invited by the Finnish government to participate in a distinguished program in Helsinki. She joins a select cohort of representatives from nine countries, each chosen to explore Finland’s progressive approach to digitization and social systems. Finland, celebrated as the happiest country in the world for the seventh consecutive year, is a model of efficient governance and cutting-edge digital integration.

One of Finland’s unique governance policies is its absence of an official census. Instead, the country relies on a fully digitized and integrated system, allowing for seamless data management and eliminating the need for traditional census methods. While Finland refrains from identifying as a socialist state, its citizens enjoy comprehensive social benefits, and over 99% of the population pays income tax, calculated automatically by the government. This high level of digital trust and transparency reinforces Finland's reputation for societal efficiency and welfare.

As the only Indian representative, Ms. Deshpande is immersed in discussions on digitization, governance, media literacy, and education with other global journalists. The program also showcases Finland’s cultural richness, from its thriving coffee culture to its delicious cuisine, and introduces participants to the warmth and trust ingrained in Finnish society.
