Sir,

It gives me immense pleasure to share my experiences of association with ‘UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute of Kashmir Studies (UMIKS) as a research scholar. My stint with UMIKS started in 2010 and the topic of my PhD research was “The Development of Science, Technology, Art and Language during the Sultanate period in Kashmir”.

I belong to Kasur city of Punjab province, Pakistan and this was indeed a unique experience for me to come to Kashmir, India and undertake research in such an important area of history of this region. The support and guidance extended to me by the Institute and everyone associated with it was exceptional. This helped me to overcome the feeling of loneliness being away from my country and helped me adjust in this beautiful land. The monthly scholarship and financial support during the period of my research helped me focus and was pivotal to its timely completion. I am extremely thankful to everyone at UMIKS especially my research guide, Prof. Gulshan Majeed for his fatherly care and scholarly support.

I am enthralled to have learnt that I am the first lady from Pakistan to have completed Ph. D. from the University of Kashmir and I sincerely hope that I am not the last. This Institute has become a bridge to fill the void of academic discourse between the two neighbours who have been trying for decades to co-exist peacefully. I believe that UMIKS would continue to fulfil its mission of furthering academic excellence in the region and to bring to life, the dream of the founder of this Institute Shri. Madanjeet Singh. His untimely demise was indeed a great loss for the Institute.

I am highly thankful to His Excellency the Governor, Shri N N Vohra for his personal care, attention and concern towards the development of UMIKS and his persistent efforts to help all scholars finish their research in a fulfilling and timely manner.

I am ever thankful to both the Honourable Vice Chancellors – Dr. Riyaz Punjabi and Dr. Talat Ahmad for always facilitating our research by using their good offices. I am also ever indebted to your goodself, Prof. Gull Muhammad Wani as Director of UMIKS and mentor for your encouragement, support and timely help in completion of my research work.

I feel proud to be part of UMIKS and hope make it big in life to make my alma mater proud.

Sincere thanks and regards,

Dr. Nadia Mehr Din,
